My city

Machín Monkey

One of the turistic places we love most is "El mono guardian del cerro" which is near "Las peñas", we really think that it´s interesting because Machín Monkey is almost extinted, this beautiful statue represents Guayas because this is a province which grews bananas, also in the highills people call us "monos".
The statue was made by Juan Sánchez, he was born in Imbabura and he has made the two others statues in Guayaquil (papagayo, iguana). The statue is twelve metters high and it costs $90.000

My classes

American Literature  (5th A-1)
In this course we survey selected American authors representing the major authors, literary movements and  fragments of the most significant works of literature produced in the U.S. since its beginnings to the present date. It also helps  future teachers to improve their reading, communicative and critical thinking skills, letting them express judgments and comments about some chapters and creating  a greater cultural awareness when exposed to essays, poetry, literary or film adaptations of the fragments.

ACTIVITY DURING THE SEMESTER

Edgar Allan Poe

Poe's best known fiction works are Gothic, a genre he followed to appease the public taste. His most recurring themes deal with questions of death, including its physical signs, the effects of decomposition, concerns of premature burial, the reanimation of the dead, and mourning. Many of his works are generally considered part of the dark romanticism genre, a literary reaction to transcendentalism, which Poe strongly disliked. He referred to followers of the movement as "Frog-Pondians" after the pond onBoston Common and ridiculed their writings as "metaphor-run mad," lapsing into "obscurity for obscurity's sake" or "mysticism for mysticism's sake."
Interesting Quote
This quote is an interesting point of view of death, Poe uses the composition of his own poem "The Raven" as an example.

Open House

The School of Languages organized on October 2012 an Open House, the students of 5th - A1 course made a representation of Edgar Allan Poe.

In this picture: Leonore (Priscila Montoya) and Edgar Allan Poe (María Fernanda González) making a representation of the poem " The Raven".

Reflective Learning

Reflective learning helps to develop critical thinking, self-awareness and analytical skills and is important to both staff and students. It involves a involvement by an individual in a reflective process. This can help to inform about what worked or didn't work, what might need to be done differently, or how individuals may need to develop their behaviour or practice. For students it may help them to understand better how theory can be applied in practice or where practice is consistent with concepts and theories.

During this year we have worked as a group, all of us have learned to share our knowledge with our classmates, for example we worked in the Open House, there, we represented different authors and we had to speak about them so in each group we helped our classmates with the pronunciation and clothes, all of us tried to make our best to do a great job, to demostrated to Miss Glenda that we were very smart and a real group.

Group Work

In a classroom setting, group work consists of small or large groups of students working on the same problem, experiment or project. Most classrooms use group work at one time or another to engage students and encourage student participation.

Peer Support

  • An advantage of classroom group work is the peer support for students. In some cases, students that work in groups are likely to teach each other, which often results in solidifying the students learning while remediating other students misconceptions, misunderstandings and weaknesses. Some classroom groups also provide peer support, encouragement and motivation between students.

Competition

  • A disadvantage of classroom group work is the conscious or unconscious perception of competition between students in the group. In some cases, a student may offer his opinion or solution regarding the project of the group. If that opinion or solution is ill-received, the student may react by sabotaging all ideas that are not in line with his own idea. Students may also ignore the suggestions of others and work to become the leader, or alpha, of the group.
  • An advantage of classroom group work is the additional opportunity teachers have to assess students. In a group setting, a teacher can determine a student’s understanding and knowledge or misconceptions and lack of understanding of a certain subject. In some cases, a group setting allows for transparency, as teachers expect all students to participate in the group. This form of assessment is beneficial for teachers that are able to tailor classroom instruction to the needs of the students.

Tips for Forming a Group

  • When using a classroom group, make the most out of the group by following a few tips. Form each group carefully, taking into consideration the personality, level of learning and communication style of each student. Set clear expectations and require mutual participation from all students in the group. Offer support and encouragement when needed.

Linguistics

Objective

The purpose of this class  is to give students the tools, tips and techniques to speak English clearly and accurately. The variety of activities, authentic audios, students´ presentations make learning innovative, fun and close to reality that they  will  handle in  elementary and high school settings in Ecuador. This year we have been focused on Pronunciation Nbr. 3, from Pearson, Longman, as well as several interactive links.

Activity during the semester
In this year, the subject of English linguistic we have learned many things that enrich our knowledge. Since the beginning of the year, our teacher has organized all the topics and she has given web sites so, each student has supporting material.

All the activities we have done have been very important in our experience as a teacher- student, but the best was the activity of the tongue twister, because it gave us the opportunity to interact with our classmates and teach in a funny way the different pronunciations, intonations, meaning of words in the English language.
The classmates did the activity very well, there was good communication of teaching and learning, it was an excellent opportunity, because we want to be good teachers and with the help of our teacher and classmates, we can learn. If we have a mistake of pronunciation or intonation they correct us and there is not any kind of mocking or laughter, because we learn from our mistakes.

Reflective Learning

Thanks to linguistic we have learned many interesting things as tongue twister, thanks to it, we found a funny way to learn the english. we used the Audio Visual skill because it's easier to understand with picture, we can interpret it and know what it means. We enjoyed this activity a lot and, someday we will make it with our students when we're good teachers.

How to Use Audio/Visual Aids in Teaching

The teaching profession is filled with countless opportunities to enrich the academic lives of students. While some concepts and educational objectives will be easy for students to grasp, others will require you to think creatively to ensure that important learning objectives are met. Using audio/visual aides in teaching is one way to enhance lesson plans and give students additional ways to process subject information.

Instructions

  1. Bridge the gap between the different types of learners by adding audio/visual aides to your teaching techniques. Since most people are visual learners, it's important to go beyond "spoken words" when educating students. Students are also more likely to learn material is they're exposed to it in a variety of ways. Always look over your lesson plans to find ways to inject different teaching styles.
  2. Implement "show and tell" sessions to promote student involvement. This will  also help you assess each student's overall understanding of the desired learning objectives. There are many ways to use show and tell sessions such as asking students to bring in modern items that still demonstrate colonial values.
